A HEALTHY MOUTH STARTS WITH HEALTHY GUMS

Healthy gums should be pink, firm, and should not bleed with brushing and flossing. However, if your gums are red, swollen, or tender, it is likely you have gum disease. Left untreated, gum disease will worsen, leading to inflammation, bleeding, and—eventually—tooth loss.

WHAT IS GUM DISEASE?

Gum disease is the result of bacterial growth near the gum line and around the tooth which leads to plaque buildup, often due to lack of oral care, but sometimes due to other causes, such as aging, smoking, or hormonal changes. Typically, when done properly, daily brushing and flossing are enough to eliminate plaque and keep gums healthy.

When plaque is allowed to build up and is not removed often enough, however, it can irritate the gums and cause them to become swollen and sensitive. This is known as gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease. When gingivitis develops and is not treated, it can become more severe. This stage of gum disease is called periodontitis and can eventually lead to tooth loss.

IS GUM DISEASE TREATABLE?

Fortunately, gum disease is 100% treatable, especially if caught early. The first step in reversing gum disease is developing and maintaining good oral hygiene. That means brushing for two minutes twice a day and flossing at least once a day—consistently. Visiting your dentist for routine cleanings is also very important.

However, if gum disease has progressed to the point that getting back to good oral hygiene habits is not enough to take care of it, Dr. Vargas and his team have treatment solutions to help get you back to perfect oral health.

SCALING & ROOT PLANING

At Vargas and Associates, we can perform deep cleaning procedures such as scaling and root planing to treat gum disease.

What is Scaling?

Scaling is a non-surgical deep cleaning procedure requiring a local anesthetic so that plaque and tartar can be removed from below the gum line.

What is Root Planing?

Root planing is the second part of the deep clean procedure, where rough spots on the teeth are smoothed out, making it harder for bacteria to stick to them.

Why does Scaling and Root Planing help?

Once all the plaque and tartar has been removed from teeth and from below the gum line and the teeth have been smoothed, the gums will begin to reattach to the newly cleaned surfaces and can start to heal, without harmful bacteria to irritate them.

Only your dentist can diagnose and treat gum disease effectively, which is why regular hygiene visits are so important. If caught and treated early, gum disease can be completely reversed without pain or hassle. Contact us today to schedule your next visit!
