Should I Replace My Missing Tooth?
Have you recently lost a tooth or have had a missing tooth for quite some time and are deciding whether it should be replaced? There are a number of reasons why a tooth might be missing. It might have been extracted due to extreme decay, experienced trauma or damage following an accident, or was removed due to severe gum disease. No matter the reason for the missing tooth, we believe our patients should always choose a tooth replacement.
Why Replace Your Tooth?
We know it can be tempting to leave a space when a rear molar is missing; however, that is not something we recommend. Even though each tooth is individual, all your teeth work as a unit. When one is removed, it changes the function and alignment of the other teeth. It can impact your bite, the way you chew your food, and potentially the way you speak. A missing tooth is a perfect opportunity for your other teeth to shift in the mouth. This can lead to an additional problem of overcrowding and crooked teeth. The jawbone also can begin to decay when a tooth is removed. Teeth provide constant stimulation to keep your jaw from deteriorating and when a tooth is removed, it does not take long for the deterioration to begin. A jaw that has deteriorated can cause the shape of the face to change as well.
Choosing a Tooth Replacement
Experiencing a missing tooth can be upsetting and leave you feeling self-conscious about your smile. It can also be difficult to decide which tooth replacement method is best for your lifestyle and budget. It is important to think about if you are looking for a permanent fix, a long-term fix, or a temporary fix.
