Healthy Food For Healthy Teeth
We don’t know about you but we are loving the arrival of summer. There is so much to enjoy between the hot weather, longer days and nights, vacation plans, plans with family and friends, and the list can go on and on. No matter what plans you have this summer, we are sure there is going to be plenty of delicious food and drink to enjoy. Unfortunately, many of the delicious foods and drinks to enjoy at your festivities may not be the best for your oral health. We want to share some healthy foods that you should include in your diet that will help your oral health.
Healthy Foods to Enjoy
While most of us love to indulge in sweet treats during the summer, our teeth will not be thanking us come fall when the decay starts to develop. While sweet treats are delicious, the extra sugar on the teeth increases acids and bacteria on the teeth leading to the development of decay. These are some examples of healthy food choices that you should include in your diet daily:
- Leafy greens
- Fish
- Yogurts and cheeses
- Lean proteins
- Carrots, celery, apples
Ways to Keep Your Mouth Healthy
Aside from eating healthy foods, there are other things you can do to ensure your teeth remain decay-free this summer. These are some helpful tips:
Enjoy Sweets With a Meal
Most people want to enjoy a sweet treat from time to time. We recommend eating your dessert immediately following your meal. Saliva levels increase in your mouth to help wash away any lingering food and bacteria. The more times you eat during the day, the more bacteria you are introducing to your mouth.
Brush After Eating
No matter what kind of food you are enjoying, it is always wise to brush after eating. Cleaning your teeth of any lingering food and bacteria helps to reduce your chances of developing decay.
