What To Know About Fluoride Treatments
At Vargas Dental Associates, we care about your oral health and your family’s oral health as well. We provide various treatments that can strengthen your teeth to help protect against decay and other concerns. One such treatment is the application of fluoride.
What is Fluoride?
Fluoride is an excellent tool that helps strengthen tooth enamel, or outer covering of your teeth. It helps prevent cavities in adults and children. It can also help reduce the amount of harmful acid left on your teeth. Fluoride is a mineral typically found in many water sources. We sometimes hear from patients who are concerned about the amount of fluoride their children are consuming. Large amounts of fluoride need to be consumed for it to be harmful and is not common. Fluoride is in drinking water and in many toothpastes. Toothpaste with fluoride optimizes proper brushing and truly plays an important role in keeping decay to a minimum and limiting the development of cavities.
Fluoride Treatment
The process for a fluoride treatment is extremely quick, making it a perfect treatment for our younger patients. This easy treatment is typically applied immediately following a hygiene examination and cleaning. The process involves coating the teeth with a concentrated fluoride solution. We recommend that patients avoid eating and drinking for 30 minutes after a fluoride treatment.
One of the best ways to maintain your whole family’s oral health is with routine hygiene examinations in our office. Most patients should visit every six months, with some patients needing to be seen more often. During these appointments, we check your teeth for any problem areas, and we will tell you if a fluoride treatment would be beneficial.
